EU Competition Commissioner Margarethe Verstager has Amazon and McDonald’s in her sights following the outing of Apple’s concessions from the Irish government. This will no doubt cause former Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker acute discomfort as special tax breaks were arranged for both corporations during his term of office with his express involvement, according to reports. Verstager is targeting a tax underpayment equivalent to around £850 million from McDonald’s and a considerably larger from Amazon. Both corporations have channelled their revenues from all European activities through Luxembourg to reduce their tax liabilities. Juncker’s continuation as President of the European Commission is being brought under question.
