M&S pushes into Europe

Marks & Spencer is launching four localised customer websites, in
Germany, Spain, Austria and Belgium. The move is part of the
retailer’s ongoing strategy to become a leading international,
multichannel retailer. It has plans to trade online in 10
international markets this financial year following the
successful launch of websites in France and Ireland.

Marks & Spencer says the move into Germany, Spain, Austria and
Belgium is due to customer demand, with online shoppers using the
international delivery option from its UK website. The four
markets are among the most popular delivery destinations and
localising the offer will help M&S “grow its business and
take customer engagement to another level”, according to a
company statement.

The news comes as M&S delivered its half-yearly report,
announcing a pretax profit decline of 10 percent, from £321
million to £290 million ($461 million). Trading during the
half year was “volatile”, affected by the Britain’s
washout summer. Further, while the jubilee and the London 2012
Olympics improved the nation’s mood, they did not translate into
higher sales, the retailer noted.
