Marks & Spencer has confirmed its plan to reduce its workforce in stores, regional management and in its support centre. In a classic case of technology replacing human resource, the retailer says that its store technology package has enabled it to reduce layers of management and overheads. It does, however, mitigate the action as it expects that a significant proportion of the job losses will be from staff desiring to take early retirement and that new roles are being created.
“Concurrently we expect to create a number of new jobs as we invest in online fulfilment and the new ambient food warehouse and reshape our portfolio over the course of the year,” said the company.
Steve Rowe CEO added: “In May we outlined our plans to learn from the (Covid-19) crisis, accelerate our transformation and deliver a stronger, more agile business in a world in which some consumer habits were changed forever.”
