Matalan delivers strong performance

Matalan has reported that its total revenues for the 13 weeks to November 27th came in at £291.4 million which is up from the prior year’s £244.8 million.

Executive chairman Steve Johnson said that the results reflected a strong performance in what continues to be challenging circumstances.

He commented: “The flow of inbound stock has suffered delays and volatility, negatively impacting availability for customers. In addition, the UK logistics and labour markets have also suffered their own levels of heavy disruption, all adding significant extra costs for retailers. I am pleased with the way in which our business has responded in managing these challenges,  demonstrating unprecedented levels of agility in making stock available to customers as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

Online sales had grown at the retailer during the period and it is now targeting strong digital growth having partnered with THG Ingenuity in December.

The new arrangement will see all of Matalan’s digital channels migrate to THG Ingenuity to transform its customer experience and increase sales.

Matalan has also invested in automation at its Knowsley distribution centre to double online fulfilment capacity.

James Brown, chief commercial officer, Matalan said: “There’s an incredible sense of energy around the business as we gear up our digital transformation and prepare for the next pivotal phase in Matalan’s growth journey.”
