In a bid to reduce its reliance on traditional bricks-and-mortar
retailing during the tough trading environment on the UK high
street, Marks & Spencer is investing £450 million in
technology over the next three years, pushing further into the
online and international markets. Working with IT services
provider NIIT Technologies, Marks & Spencer will replace its
warehouse and distribution infrastructure with an integrated
logistics network that will include new overseas warehouses and
offshore stockholding facilities. Marks & Spencer expects its
online business, M&S Direct, to deliver sales of £500
million by 2010/11.
