Multichannel group break-up sell-off on the cards?

National press speculation suggests that Thompson & Morgan could be up for sale. Currently, in the ownership of BVG, a multi-brand DTC business which has recently closed its Samuel Windsor brand and is seeking a buyer for another of its brands – Clifford James, BVG also owns another horticultural business, Suttons, which it acquired in November 2020. It is mooted that BVG which is backed by the Business Growth Fund is in talks with KPMG on strategic options which could lead to a sale of the business.

Thompson & Morgan, like most gardening related businesses, enjoyed an extraordinarily strong 2020 driven by consumers investing in their gardens during Covid-19 lockdowns. It was acquired by BVG in  March 2017.

Asked for an update on the situation, BVG founder Iain Burgess responded: “Our strategy reviews are for the board and the board only – we do not  comment on speculative press articles.”
