MYGroup’s partnership with The Hut Group (THG) recognised with award

MYGroup’s partnership with The Hut Group (THG) recognised with award

The partnership between MyGroup is focused on recycling out-of-date Myprotein stock into nutrient-rich fish and livestock feed, with MYGroup calling on its expertise in processing food waste to transform the product by blending it with other upcycled ingredients at its The Maltings facility in South Milford, N.Yorks.

THG recevied the Circular Transition of the Year award for the partnership in the Sustainable Company Awards, run by sustainable investment and green finance publication, Environmental Finance.

One of the award judges said the work to convert Myprotein into fish feed was: ‘An excellent initiative that delivers tangible positive environmental outcomes as well as a positive economic impact in reducing waste costs for the company and providing a useful raw material for MYGroup.’

Beyond its food waste capabilities, MYGroup was uniquely placed to partner on the initiative due to its longstanding expertise in producing aqua feeds from waste, with the company having brought several products to market over the years through its British Aqua Feeds arm.

Since MYGroup began working with THG, nearly 160 tons of Myprotein products have been remanufactured into the feed, with another 60 tons of the product’s packaging, including cardboard and plastic, recycled and remanufactured through MYGroup’s other industry-leading processes.

This has included furniture and fittings for schools manufactured with MYBoard™, a material similar in consistency to plywood, produced entirely from waste plastic.

“This recognition showcases that innovation is at the heart of THG and will continue to spur on more innovative sustainability efforts in acting as a force for good to leave the world a better place than we found it, “ said Mark Jones, chief sustainability officer, THG

“It’s fantastic to be working with this giant of the retail industry and giving new life to such a ubiquitous and widely sold product,” added Steve Carrie, group director, MYGroup

The partnership feeds into THG’s commitment to divert 100 per cent of landfill waste from its own operations by 2030. Prior to working with MYGroup, THG was often left with excess stock of Myprotein products that couldn’t be resold and had to be disposed of.
