National Trust to let 1300 more employees go

The National Trust is to make over 500 compulsory redundancies in addition to the 780 staff who have taken voluntary redundancy as the membership organisation is challenged by the need to reduce its running costs. Blaming Covid-19 for impacting virtually every aspect of its income generation which forced a closure of its gardens, houses, car parks shops and tea rooms, this new swathe of redundancies is in addition to the 160 jobs lost earlier in the year.

Helen McGrady, director general, National Trust said: “This is a very painful time for so many organisations, businesses and communities, The Trust is only as strong as it is because of its people – our staff, volunteers and supporters.

“No leader wants to be forced into announcing any redundancies, but coronavirus means we simply have no other choice if we want to give the charity a sustainable future.”
