New pandemic restrictions kick in

Scotland is to stop all non-essential shops from offering a click & collect facility effective from 00.01 on 14th January. According to reports, similar ban is under discussion for England, Wales and North Ireland. John Lewis had already announced that it will suspend click & collect at its stores amidst rising concern that the resulting queues have been posing too much of a risk to customers of the virus spreading.

This move has been countered by JRNI whose chief customer officer Hayley-Jayne Cone said: “There is no need to suspend click and collect completely. It is a minority of irresponsible retailers and consumers that are causing click and collect chaos. Physical queues are unnecessary and potentially unsafe at the moment. Many retailers are using a combination of technology, good customer service, and common sense to ensure that safe shopping experiences can continue. Many of our customers are offering kerbside pick-up rather than click and collect, so the shopper never has to leave their car. That way, so long as staff are following protocol, it is a COVID secure way to keep stores trading and both customers and staff safe.”
