News roundup–CatEx takes a stand against amendments to EU Directive, more

Marks & Spencer says it had a “good year
with growth in market share in all areas”. Pretax profits
rose 11 percent, from £702.7 million last year to
£780.6 million in the year ended 2nd April. M&S Direct sales
were up 31 percent in the year, while international sales grew by
6.1 percent, accounting for 10.3 percent of total group
revenues.

Catalogue Exchange (CatEx) has launched a campaign calling on the
government to abandon the proposals to amend the Consumer Rights
Directive, which could see retailers forced to sell into all
countries within the EU and offer free returns. The trade body’s
advisory board is working in partnership with the British Retail
Consortium to lobby against the amendments and to call for a
further review. It’s also calling on its members to lobby their
MEPs, to ensure they are more aware of the wider impact of this
legislation.

Postal workers in London have voted yes to strike action against
the closure of three mail centres and one delivery office in
London. The Communications Workers Union has said that up to
3,500 Royal Mail staff will take industrial action unless
“reassurances are given over job security and concerns of
bullying are addressed”.
