News roundup–Joules, John Lewis, Holz Toys, more


Following a year of strong growth, which saw apparel
retailer/cataloguer Joules post record profits,
the company has restructured its senior-level management. It has
made a number of key appointments including appointing former
Fat Face chief executive Louise Barnes as
chairman, effective January 2011. Colin Porter, previously
commercial director at House of Fraser, is named
chief operating officer. Kara Groves joins from
Blacks as merchandising and supply chain
director in January, and Lynsey Scott joins from Jack
Wills
as creative director.

Online sales at John Lewis will exceed £500
million this year, with its apparel offering contributing
significantly to that figure. In related news, writes the
Independent, John Lewis will launch an
overseas delivery service next year, initially covering
Europe.

Holz Toys, a Cornwall-based seller of
traditional and wooden toys, has relaunched its website and
revamped its look. The website had been closed during the summer
whilst the company reinvigorated its product range and refocused
its order processing. Holz Toys has decided against producing a
print catalogue in order to keep costs down.

Sainsbury’s and Best Buy‘s new
entertainment websites are both based in the Channel Islands,
writes the Guardian. They join Amazon,
HMV, Tesco,
Play.com, Asda and
Woolworths.co.uk, who all sell from the Channel
Islands, taking advantage of a VAT loophole.

The Guardian reports that high-street apparel
retailer Monsoon has identified concerns at its
suppliers’ factories in India and China regarding failures to pay
minimum wage and employing child labour.

Unattanded delivery specialist ByBox, which
provides field service engineers with a UK network of secure
boxes into which parts can be delivered, is considering expanding
its service to the consumer market, reports the Telegraph. So far, a trial with lingerie
etailer Figleaves has “produced
encouraging results”.
