News roundup–online shopping stats, Royal Mail apologises for disruption to service

Research by regulator Ofcom has found that UK consumers made
twice as many online purchases as most of their European
counterparts in the last six months. Polish shoppers were almost
as prolific, making 14 purchases each, compared with the UK’s 19
purchases per user. The next country was Germany, with nine
purchases. Brits also spent the most, splashing out £1,031
each. This was almost double the amount spent by online shoppers
in the second-placed country Germany, where shoppers spent
£595 each.

Royal Mail has issued an apology to customers affected by delays
to deliveries due to adverse weather conditions. To limit
disruption to customers the operator has switched the
distribution of some letters and packets from air to road and
rail where airport closures are reported and taken on additional
trucks and rail services to move mail to distribution centres as
close as possible to the area for delivery. It has also
temporarily withdrawn the next-day guarantee for its Special
Delivery service.
