News roundup–profits up at Lakeland, more

Profits at kitchenware cataloguer/retailer
Lakeland jumped 58 percent from £4.3
million in 2008 to £6.8 million last year. Revenues were
also up, rising 5.3 percent to £141.9 million, according to
an article in This Is London. Sales
are split almost equally between online/mailorder and Lakeland’s
retail stores.

Group revenues at video-game retailer Game Group
are down 9.6 percent in the 26 weeks ended 31 July 2010.
Like-for-like sales fell 10.9 percent during the period. Losses
also widened, with Game reporting a first-half loss of £18.8
million before nonrecurring costs and tax, compared with a profit
of £14.5 million in 2009. Chairman Peter Lewis is looking on
the bright side, however, saying in a statement that Game has
“increased market share in all of our territories since
January and maintained our leading position in
Europe”.

JJB Sports
has appointed former director of food
marketing at the Co-operative Group Debbie
Robinson as marketing director.
