News roundup–Tesco, Mobile Fun

Tesco has announced it is withdrawing from Japan
and selling its smallest international retail business. The
supermarket’s chief executive Philip Clarke said in a statement
that having reviewed the company’s performance in Japan, Tesco
concluded that it “cannot build a sufficiently scalable
business”.

Mobile-phone accessories etailer Mobile Fun will
launch Spanish and Dutch websites next month as part of its
continued expansion into Continental Europe. It has appointed two
country managers to oversee the move.

The arrival of Findel’s 24 Studio catalogue in
August and Tesco‘s online advice to prepare
early for Christmas, prompted the Telegraph to wonder whether more retailers
will bring forward their Christmas campaign dates in order to
maximise footfall in stores, and by extension, sales. Another
reason to start early, according to the piece, is to ensure
retailers aren’t left with too much overstock at the end of the
season.
