News roundup–turnover up at The Book Depository, more

Turnover at online bookseller The Book
Depository
rose more than 20 percent to £74 million
in the year ending June 2010. The company recently won a Queen’s
Award for Enterprise–for International Trade and was listed
third in The Sunday Times International Track 100 for UK
private firms with the fastest growing international sales. The
company continues to support its international customers and
despatches more than 140,000 parcels a week worldwide.

As part of its strategy to acquire businesses that are
complementary to its product range, Flying
Brands
has completed the acquisition of Garden
Centre Online
, an online retailer of gardening hardware
products, for £130,000. For the 12 months to August 2009
turnover at Garden Centre Online was £1.25 million, which
generated a loss before tax of £110,000. It is anticipated
that for the period to 31 August 2010, sales will be similar to
2009 with a small loss before tax. Flying Brands operates
Gardening Direct and Garden Bird
Supplies
among other titles.

Online sales grew by 18 percent in July, representing the highest
yearly growth in month of July since 2007. The latest results
from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index attribute the growth
to wet weather experienced during the month driving shoppers to
search for holiday deals and indulge in retail therapy.
