It’s been widely reported that Chancellor Rishi Sunak won’t be making any decision on the potential introduction of an online sales tax until the Autumn at least.
Under options being considered for the so called ‘Amazon tax’ are a two per cent levy on all online sales and/or a charge on deliveries. The move aims to redress the tax balance between physical and online retailers. The new tax proposals have divided opinions, and could, ultimately, hit consumers by inflating the prices for goods.
Mr Sunak was expected to give an update tomorrow.
The decision has been delayed, according to government officials speaking to The Financial Times, while the Treasury waits to see if its counterparts in the US administration will back the OECD-led global digital tax reforms.
