Ocado to close its original DC

Ocado to close its original DC

Ocado is making a further push into fully automated distribution facilities and has announced that it will shutter its Hatfield site. This will result in changes for around 2300 employees who are in consultation. Ocado says that it hopes to redeploy some of them at its nearby sites.

The Hatfield facility currently handles about 20 per cent of Ocado’s weekly orders which will be moved to its new automated warehouse in Luton which will open later this year.

Tim Steiner, Ocado CEO said: “As the online grocery channel grows, our new enhanced fulfilment centres and technologies will drive a step change in customer experience and efficiency. With this capacity coming online, now is the right time for us to halt operations at our oldest facility at Hatfield and consider our future options for the site.”
