Fair-trade fashion brand People Tree has secured a £1
million finance package from Oikocredit as it plans “an
exciting year of expansion”. The company will use the cash
injection primarily to make more advanced payments to People
Tree’s producer partners. “We became exhausted during the
search for investment,” said People Tree director Safia
Minney, “as conventional venture capitalists wanted an
unrealistic return, and philanthropists just don’t understand
fair-trade businesses, which campaign on fair-trade issues but
are not charities.” People Tree says it was fortunate to
finally find a partner that could offer the flexible financing
package it required. The latest People Tree catalogue was
launched on 25th February to mark the start of Fair Trade
Fortnight.
