Royal Mail is proposing to cut up to 2,500 head-office and support-function roles by the end of 2027 as part of a wider organisational review.
The company said the proposed reductions represent less than 2 per cent of its workforce of more than 131,000 people. Frontline roles, including posties and drivers, are not expected to be affected.
Royal Mail plans to make the reductions through natural attrition and voluntary redundancy. Formal consultation is under way with the Communication Workers Union and Unite CMA.
The review is intended to simplify processes, remove duplicated work and speed up decision-making as Royal Mail implements Universal Service reform.
The company said letter volumes have fallen by more than 70 per cent from their peak, while demand for faster and more convenient parcel services has continued to grow.
Chief executive Alistair Cochrane said the proposed changes would allow Royal Mail to invest further in customer service.
