Giving the traditional catalogue a spin, RS Components has
launched a free iPad app that provides RS with a new way to
display product and technology information, extending and
enhancing editorial content with additional detail, images,
animation, and video.
Written specifically for design engineers, technical managers and
technicians working in the field of electronics, RS Components’
eTech magazine is an online and printed publication distributed
globally. With the eTech for iPad app, RS is taking the
publication a step further than a page-turning digital magazine,
says Glenn Jarrett, head of electronics marketing at RS.
“With more and more information sources available to design
engineers, it is imperative that RS provides them with news and
views in the format that they find both informative and
engaging,” he says. With the app, users can stay abreast of
industry developments when they are offline too.
The print version of the eTech publication was first
produced in November 2009, followed by a page-turning digital
issue in July 2010. RS says that eTech will continue to
be available in all formats.
RS Component is also testing new ways to distribute its general
product catalogue, seeking alternatives to the print edition.
Following customer research, RS identified that some customers
prefer to access the catalogue via a digital edition and
developed a publication that can be delivered on a USB stick.
“In the Netherlands, for example, 35 percent of our
customers prefer to receive a USB stick with a page
turner,” said Patrick Bramman, media account services
manager at parent company Electrocomponents. While a digital
edition of the RS catalogue is available in the UK, there are
currently no plans to introduce a catalogue delivered on USB,
though Bramman says the business continues to “explore all
options”.
