Sainsbury’s will open a 185,000 sq.ft. fulfilment facility in Bromley by Bow, East London this Autumn. It will accommodate the supermarket chain’s customers’ growing demand for online grocery deliveries in London and the South East, removing some of the strain on its stores which are currently used for online order picking. The retailer is to hire 470 new staff initially and expects the figure to rise to 900 in total by 2020.
The supermarket chain has also entered the fast delivery fray with a trial of same day delivery from three of its stores – Streatham Common, Brookwood and Richamond in Surrey – as it seeks to secure its online customers against defection to Amazon, or any one of its other competitors.
