Scottish postage costs will rise

Amidst the many announcements from government,  businesses,  and service providers to customers based in Scotland comes word that one of the first changes an independent Scotland would wake up to is a significant rise in its postal costs. The service currently provided by Royal Mail is subject to the universal service obligation which means that there is a level rate charged for all post delivered within the United Kingdom, whether to major cities or to the remote rural areas of the country.  If Scotland becomes independent then it will be called upon to set up its own postal service, under EU law,  and that service will either need to be very heavily subsidised by any new postal service provider or  charge significantly higher rates.
