Shein to face major ‘homegrown’ competition

Alibaba has launched a fast fashion platform, AllyLikes with which is targeting global consumer markets. This will present Shein with a major competitor for its cheap takes on other brands’ lines which have been taking a significant share of consumer spend. Shein was the most downloaded app in the USA in May this year and has also made serious inroads into the UK and Europe.

AllyLikes is not unlike Shein in that it is promoting the latest fashion with very low pricing as well as free shipping when US customers spend US$49. It is also targeting consumers in France, Italy and Canada.

In related news, Alibaba’s shares rose by around 7 per cent following Jack Ma’s appearance during a trip to Europe when announcements were made about the business’ latest launch – a chip designed for servers and international expansion of its cloud business which competes with Amazon’s AWS.
