Sports Direct acquires Republic

Sports Direct, the British sports retailer founded by
Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley, has acquired the fashion chain Republic out
of administration for an undisclosed sum. The deal sees Sports Direct purchase
114 Republic stores, the brand name and head office, all of the stock in the
business as well as its website and own brands, including SoulCal, Fabric and
Crafted. In a statement, Republic’s joint administrator Hunter Kelly, of Ernst
& Young, says around “2,100 jobs” will be saved as a result of the buyout.
