Mike Ashley has reportedly approached Debenhams’ board expressing a desire to work closely with them having quietly acquired a 4.6 per cent stake in the department store group. Ashley who owns USC and Republic in addition to Sports Direct and JJB, as well as significant stakes in other retailers plus the Dunlop, Slazenger, Firetrap and Lonsdale brands, had previously courted House of Fraser.
