Strikes set to hamper Royal Mail progress

Strike actions are being threatened by the Communication Workers Union (CWU) as the Royal Mail says it will be pressing on with automation plans and modernisation of its services. The plans include automation of its parcel hub in Warrington to increase capacity to 40,000 items an hour and a new lease for an automated hub in the Midlands which will have capacity for 60,000 items an hour. Options are also being explored for a third automated hub.

A spokesperson for Royal Mail said: “We are deploying a range of much needed local change initiatives and key trials which have been held up for many months.”
