Online retailer, Amazon, has sparked new controversy about
its tax avoidance after figures published this week show it paid just £4.2m in
tax last year – despite selling £4.3bn worth of goods. Although it has a strong
British operation, Amazon uses its headquarters in the tax free jurisdiction of
Luxemburg to book its profits, thus explaining the 0.1 per cent tax paid by the
Kindle manufacturer last year. Amazon says it pays all applicable taxes in the
jurisdictions it operates within.
