Tesco Direct to sell Finest furniture

Tesco has launched its Finest furniture range in the
spring/summer 2008 Tesco Direct catalogue. The venture puts
Tesco’s made-to-measure furniture online for the first time, in a
“toe in the water” operation, said Joanne Coe,
upholstery buying manager at Tesco Direct. Tesco says that making
the furniture available online as well as in its stores will put
it in direct competition with Laura Ashley and Marks & Spencer.

Tesco’s online confidence didn’t stretch to its fashion assortment, however. The company stopped selling apparel online earlier this month. As of the 11th April a message on the Tesco website read, “We have listened to your feedback and will be trying to improve our offer based on this. Check back here for more news soon.”

Even so, overall Tesco Direct is performing well, according to a recent statement from the company. “Sales are growing well, and last year we comfortably exceeded our plan to generate turnover in excess of £150 million, delivering sales of almost £180 million,” chief executive Sir Terry Leahy told the City as he presented the company’s results for the 52 weeks ended 23rd February.
