Thompson and Morgan buys fertiliser brand

Seeds and plants cataloguer Thompson & Morgan acquired plant-food
manufacturer Chempak for an undisclosed sum in February. Chempak
was previously owned by John Richardson, who also runs the Garden
Direct mail order business. The acquisition includes the Chempak
brand name and all stock, but does not include employees.
Negotiations regarding the sale had been ongoing since October
2009.

“Thompson & Morgan firmly believes the
Chempak range of products complements our plants and seeds
business, and will make an excellent addition to the T&M
portfolio,” says Helen Johns, the company’s press and
public relations manager.
Thompson & Morgan’s first focus, says Johns, will be on
increasing Chempak’s availability in the retail outlets where T&M
sells its seeds.

Johns would not be drawn on whether the company plans to launch
Chempak as an online or catalogue business, or whether Chempak
products would be sold through Thompson & Morgan’s catalogues.
Thompson & Morgan has pledged to produce Chempak’s range to the
same formulas as it has always been made, and for the time being
will continue production using current manufacturing
arrangements.
