Working conditions in UK textile sector cause concern

Concerns are being expressed about working conditions in some of the UK’s textile factories which supply high street and online retailers. With the current focus on the return of manufacturing to the UK from third world countries, it seems that certain factory owners are exploiting their workers and paying below minimum wage. A number of major retailers who could potentially place considerable contracts with UK manufacturers have commented that they are nervous of using some of the factories in Leicester are because of doubts as to the safety and well being of the workers employed by them in what has been described as sweatshop conditions.

There appear to be multiple issues concerning working conditions, corner cutting in areas like health and safety, and a blatant disregard for employment law.

Meetings are planned with the fire service, police and HM Revenue & Customs to discuss what can be done to bring rogue employers into line.
