Twitter has commenced small scale trials in the USA of a “buy now” button that participating retailers can embed in their twitter promotions for specific products. Once consumers click the button they are taken to a new screen to select from options such as colour or size and are able to complete the order delivery details and make payment. Payment data will be held by Twitter so that any future purchases can be made with fewer clicks. Businesses trialling the service include The Home Depot and Burberry, along with the merchandise sales operations for assorted bands.
Pundits are, in the main, sceptical as to whether Twitter can deliver worthwhile volumes of sales for most merchants, but some say that the social site could find a niche with flash sales and offers timed to coincide with major band tours when fan activity on Twitter peaks.
