Alibaba generated over US $10 billion sales on Singles Day, up from US $9.3 billion in 2014. 70 per cent of orders were placed from mobiles at the Alibaba online platform. The sale event was promoted globally with some 30,000 brands from 25 countries involved as well as creating an opportunity for Chinese merchants to sell to international customers via AliExpress.
This year Alibaba had encouraged retailers to get involved in the promotion and this saw 180,000 retail stores take part including over 8000 in Beijing. Customers entering participating stores were sent special promotion coupons to their mobiles.
