Clarks is to create 80 jobs as it opens a new manufacturing unit at its Somerset HQ to produce Desert Boots. With the capacity to turn out 300,000 pairs a year, the new unit will deploy robot-assisted technology and is the forerunner for further of its own production units in other locations in locations including the USA, Europe and Asia. The company says that this will enable shorter lead times and a faster response to changing trends and consumer demand.
CEO Mike Shearwood commented “We are delighted to be bringing shoe manufacturing back to the UK and creating a significant number of highly skilled jobs. The 21st-century craftsmanship that we are introducing will also lead to and encourage innovation in shoe design. It will be transformative to the process of how we design and develop shoes.”
