Primark has offered further support to its suppliers by agreeing to pay for all items that were in production, finished and ready for shipment by April 17th. This extends its previous commitment which covered the period to 18th March. As previously reported it cancelled all new orders on 23rd March as with all stores closed and in the absence of an eCommerce operation, it would have been hard-pressed to store the stock until the restrictions on retail store opening were lifted.
Primark CEO Paul Marchant said: “This announcement represents a further ongoing commitment to our relationships with our suppliers. We have been in close and regular contact with our suppliers over the past few weeks to find a way forward, and to pay for as much of the previously ordered product as possible.”
The move comes in marked contrast to that of a number of other fast fashion retailers which have left the burden of the consequences and costs of order cancellations with their suppliers which are, often, the only major employers in some regions of third world nations.
