The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has approved Amazon’s acquisition of 16 per cent of the equity in Deliveroo. The CMA had originally probed the £440 million transaction saying that it could impact the positive effects of competition if Amazon had, instead, launched its own rival service.
Stuart McIntosh, chair of the CMA inquiry commented: “Looking closely at the size of the shareholding and how it will affect Amazon’s incentives, as well as the competition that the businesses will continue to face in food delivery and convenience groceries, we’ve found that the investment should not have a negative impact on customers.”
