Debenhams has placed online shoppers into a virtual queue after its site was swamped with customers looking for a bargain.
The news comes after the retailer fell into administration yesterday and administrators announced a ‘wind-down’ of the department store chain’s operations. As a result, Debenhams launched a stock clearance this morning.
But, the 242-year old store has struggled to deal with the influx of traffic to the website.
There have been reports of the website crashing and many shoppers placed in an extensive virtual queue with waiting times of up to 50 minutes.
In a message to customers on its website, Debenhams states: “Sorry for the wait, we are currently using a virtual queue due to exceptional demand. We will get you onto the site as soon as possible.”
The retailer is limiting visitors to its site to a 30-minute window to fill their basket and start the checkout process.
Some social media users reported as many as 900,000 other customers in the queue, according to BBC News.
