Sound Control Group, the £50 million musical instrument
retailer, has gone into administration. The directors had already
tried selling the business. John Reid and Bill Dawson of Deloitte
have been appointed administrators following applications to the
courts by the group’s directors. Deloitte says Sound Control was
hurt by “increased competition from the internet”.
Following an operational review, the administrators closed 10 of
the group’s 26 stores, which operated under the brand names Sound
Control, Media Tools, Turnkey and Soho Sound House. It also
ceased its telesales activity, stopped taking orders on its
websites, which include SoundControl.co.uk and Turnkey.co.uk, and
made 160 of its 338 employees redundant. The business will
continue to trade from the remaining 16 stores while the
administrators explore additional sale options.
