- November’s year-on-year online sales rose 11 percent, to
£5.3 billion, according to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales
Index. That’s a 25 percent increase from October’s web
sales. - Nearly two-thirds of retailers are offering discounts or
other promotions this holiday season, according to
PricewaterhouseCoopers, with an average discount of 35 percent.
As the Times notes, “That is only slightly
below the record discounting last year, when 80 percent of
retailers held pre-Christmas sales with an average 45 percent
off”. -
John Lewis managing director Andy Street
explains to the Telegraph why the department store retailer
decided, despite the recession, “that the best form of
defence was attack and launched a range of new
initiatives”, including expansion of its fashion range
and online business.
