Germany-based media conglomerate Bertelsmann, which wound down
its UK and Dutch bookclub businesses
last year, has pulled out of the Italian bookclub market. It
sold its stake in the Mondolibri book club and the Bol.it online
bookstore joint venture to its partner, Italian publishing group
Mondadori, for €6.75 million (£5.93 million).
Bertelsmann says it aims to continue selling via clubs in
German-speaking territories, as well as in France, eastern
Europe, and Spain.
