Amazon preps to open Amazon Go store in London

Ealing in West London is rumoured to be the site of Amazon Go’s first ‘contactless’ store in the UK.

According to a raft of reports, Amazon is bringing its checkout-free shopping experience to British consumers ‘this week’.

If it follows the same model as its US counterparts – Amazon Go (convenience stores) and Amazon Go Grocery, the UK store will use Amazon’s ‘Just Walk Out Technology’.  The tech relies on cameras, sensors, and AI to automatically detects when items are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of everything in a virtual cart.

People need to download the Amazon Go app before they arrive, then scan a QR code from the app to enter the store.

When they’ve finished shopping, they can ‘just walk out’. They don’t need to queue or checkout. Amazon will send them a receipt later and charge their Amazon account.

There are currently 24 Amazon Go stores open in the US.
