Amazon has raised the minimum order value its customers need to spend to qualify for free UK delivery. A spend of over £10 is now required for free delivery of book orders and >£20 for other products. Whilst consumer are complaining bitterly, other merchants which have been forced to offer free or subsidised P&P charges in the wake of competition from the eCommerce giant are watching closely. Readers have commented that a more level playing field may well result from this move by Amazon as customers who were attracted by its free P&P offer are now going to be more likely to shop around and see what other online retailers are offering. Others see this as a cynical ploy by Amazon to recruit more customers for its Prime subscription package which offers unlimited free delivery on a wide range of products once customers have paid an annual £79 joining fee.
