Direct sellers expand retail footprint

Adopting a multichannel approach is good for business; just ask
Screwfix. In the first quarter of the new financial year, total
sales at the tools specialist grew 10.2 percent to £137
million thanks to new ranges, the opening of eight new outlets
and the successful introduction of a mobile “click, pay and
collect” offer, while retail profit increased 31.7 percent
to £11 million.

The addition of more stores is something furniture retailer Dwell
has also set its sights on. The cataloguer/retailer revealed that
it will expand its bricks-and-mortar presence to around 60 stores
in the “not-too-distant future”. Dwell founder Aamir
Ahmad says that “despite the current climate we’re feeling
really positive and pushing on with our expansion”. He is
planning to open 40 “larger” high street stores,
complemented by a further 20 boutique outlets in suburban
areas.

And expansion isn’t limited to the home turf. Charles Tyrwhitt is
planning to open stores in Chicago, Boston, Atlanta and Houston
over the next couple of years, having targeted the USA’s biggest
business cities. The apparel retailer is also planning to open
more stores in New York, adding to the three stores already open
in the city. The news follows recent store openings in Washington
DC in April and in New York in May.
