Driver shortage ignites strike threat

Yodel is facing a backlash from some of its permanently employed drivers who, represented by the GBM union, are demanding pay parity with agency workers used by the carrier as well as a better deal when it comes to payments in lieu of holidays. There are also claims that the business has failed in some cases to honour contractual agreements over both sick and holiday pay.

Whilst it is understood that only 250 of its drivers have voted for industrial action via a GMB ballot, the union is claiming something of a victory with its national officer, Nadine Houghton saying “GMD drivers working for parcel delivery giant Yodel have returned a massive vote in favour of taking industrial action over pay and working conditions.” She added that acute labour shortages presented an opportunity for working people to organise and take action to improve their lot.

Yodel responded via a spokesperson: “We are in ongoing, meaningful talks with GMB officials with a further meeting scheduled for next week. We will continue to work in good faith and remain committed to finding a resolution for our valued transport colleagues on any outstanding matters.”

Industrial action has been moted by drivers employed by Booker and Hanson.
