German Amazon workers take strike action

Employees at the German warehouse operations of Amazon have taken strike action again as trade union Verdi stepped up the pressure on the US owned online giant to improve pay and conditions. Some 9,000 distribution centre staff across nine locations are employed by Amazon in Germany,  plus an additional 14,000 seasonal workers.

Back in June , union led walkouts had been staged at three sites. The union is pressing for Amazon to increase pay for workers at its distribution centres to bring rates in line with collective bargaining agreements across the mail order and retail industry. Amazon however rejects the demands saying that it regards its warehouse staff as logistics workers  and that they are already paid more than the average rate for that “industry”.
