M&S to close stores

Marks and Spencer is pursuing its five year UK store estate programme which it announced in November. It will start by closing six of its “full-line” stores – in Portsmouth, Slough, Wokingham, Warrington, Worksop and Monks Cross, with affected staff being offered roles in other nearby stores. It will also open 34 new food stores and two full line stores, the latter locations of which are Bracknell and Rushden. Marks and Spencer currently operates from 959 UK stores, 304 of which are full-line, 615 food only, and 40 are outlets.

Steve Rowe, M&S CEO said “M&S stores will always be an integral part of our customer offer, working seamlessly alongside our website to deliver great products and service to our customers. However, our customers’ habits are changing. Picking up food for now or tonight rather than doing one big shop or browsing and shopping online are great examples of this and we are committed to adapting our business so that we stay in tune with our customers.”
