News roundup–Aspace, Screwfix, and more

Children’s furniture retailer/cataloguer Aspace
will open its fifth store on 20th December in Fulham, London.
Paul Cunningham, managing director, told Catalogue
e-business
he plans to open more stores during 2011,
doubling the company’s portfolio to eight stores by the end of
next year.

Online spending on Monday, 6th December, will reach £480
million-a 15 percent increase on last year, reports voucher-code
website CyberMonday.co.uk. In the US, which had its Cyber Monday
this week (the Monday after Thanksgiving), online sales exceeded
$1 billion. UK consumers can also look forward to Free Delivery
Day 2010, which will see more than 100 retailers participating in
offering free shipping to UK addresses on 10th December.

Sales at tools cataloguer Screwfix grew 4.1
percent to £127 million in the third quarter. Much of the
growth was attributed to new ranges and the addition of
specialist trade desks exclusive to plumbers and electricians
within Screwfix’s outlets. These outlets now generate around 60
percent of total sales. Retail profit was £8 million, up
£5 million year-on-year. At sister company
B&Q, UK and Ireland sales fell 4.7 percent o
£924 million in the third quarter to 30th October,
representing a like-for-like decline of 5.1 percent.

Apparel retailer H&M has announced it will
launch its first-ever UK print catalogue for Spring 2011. The
catalogue is expected to land on doormats before the end of
December.
