News roundup–Primondo titles acquired by Carlyle Group, more


The Carlyle Group has acquired Versandhaus Walz,
Planet Sports, Bon’A Parte,
Elegance, Mirabeau, and a 50
percent stake in Vertbaudet Germany from
Primondo, the mail order arm of collapsed German
multichannel retailer Arcandor. Terms of the
deal were not disclosed. Following the buyout, Carlyle intends to
expand the business in Germany and overseas through organic
growth and acquisitions.

Looking for some Christmas stats? How about these from IMRG and
Retail Decisions:

  • Brits are estimated to spend half a billion pounds online on
    Sunday 5th and Monday 6th December
  • online sales will peak around midday to 1pm on 6th December,
    reaching an hourly spend of £23.2 million
  • Total online spend for the Christmas period (November to
    December) is anticipated to be £12.4 billion

Now for some more sobering statistics from Intersperience:

  • overall, British consumers will spend £500 less on
    Christmas this year.
  • the average amount people are prepared to spend this year is
    £241 per head.

Pretax losses at Dixons Retail, the parent
company of Currys and PC World,
narrowed from £17.6 million in first half of 2009 to
£7.9 million in the first half of the 2010/11 fiscal year.
Underlying EBIT improved too, from £5.6 million to £8.2
million in the 24 weeks to 16th October 2010.

EC2i’s Malcolm Greenleaf has passed away at his home after a
battle with bowel cancer. Described as “charismatic,
ever-optimistic, irrepressible” by his colleagues, he will
be sadly missed by all who knew him.
