Primark has announced that its sales were up by 4 per cent for the 16 weeks to 5 January and that profit had risen above that achieved for the same period last year. Its UK business sales were up by 1 per cent, with like-for-like sales up in September and October, but lower for November. Christmas trading period sales exceeded expectations.
In the Eurozone sales rose by 5 per cent in the period at constant currency with the best growth coming from France, Belgium and Italy, against lower demand in Germany. In the US sales were ahead of the previous year.
During the period Primark had opened four new shops in the period, these were in Seville and Almeria in Spain, Toulouse in France and Berlin in Germany. In addition, it relocated two UK stores and enlarged its Merry Hill store.
