Primark to repay furlough monies despite sales drop

Primark’s half year sales fell by 41 per cent to £2.23bn with profits down by 90 per cent to £43m. Despite this, the parent company AB Foods has said it will repay £121m in furlough subsidies received from the government’s job retention scheme and also pay a dividend to its shareholders.

Primark joined other non-essential retailers in re-opening its stores in England and Wales on 12th April and has seen customers queueing at its doors ever since.

“We’re excited about welcoming customers back into our stores as the lockdowns ease and are delighted with record sales in England and Wales in the week after re-opening on 12 April,” said AB Foods CEO George Weston. Adding “With our success in a number of new markets as wide-ranging as Poland and Florida, we are as convinced as we have ever been in the long-term growth prospects for Primark.”
