Zalando enters Scandinavia

Germany-based Zalando, an online seller of apparel and footwear,
is entering the Scandinavian market. The retailer, which has
surpassed last year’s turnover of €160 million in just six
months to reach €200 million (£166 million, $263
million) in the first half of 2012, will open up in Sweden,
Finland, Denmark and Norway in May.

“We will pursue the same strategy in Scandinavia that has
been effective for the opening up of all our markets,”
explains Christian Meermann, Zalando’s chief marketing officer.
“We use a perfected marketing mix that has been tailored to
the respective market and we invest systematically in marketing
facilities in order to be able to extend our involvement even
more.” This includes offering customers free shipping and
returns, a range of approximately 100,000 products and 1,300
brands.

The move follows Zalando’s sale of a 4 per cent equity stake to
international investment firm DST Global. The company is already
active in seven European countries including Germany, Austria,
Switzerland, France, Italy, the Netherlands and the UK.
